10 Super Sight Word Activities (for your kinder classroom)


Learning sight words is a very important part of learning to read. That is why I put together this list of 10 super sight word activities. Try out a few or all of the ideas in your classroom. I am sure your students will have a blast learning sight words with these fun activities.

1. Fishing for Sight Words – @learning.through.play

How it Works:
Students take a sight word out of a bag. Then, they have to fish for it using the magnetic rod. After students write the sight word on a whiteboard.


2. Bowling for Sight Words – @meetmissparker

How it Works:
First, tie sight words to bowling pins. Then, students use a bowling ball to knock down sight words. Have them write down the sights words they knocked down.


3. Sight Words Splat Eggs @busylittlebunnies

How it Works:
Students pick up a yolk. They read the word on the yolk. Then, they match it to the eggs. They can even write down the matching combinations.


4. Sight Word High Five – @teaching.this.way

How it Works:
Place hands with sight words written on them by the door to your classroom. As students leave the classroom they read the sight words and give high fives to the hands.


5. Lace-a-words – @misseugesada

How it Works:
Students build sight words using lace and letter beads. You can give them flashcards of the sight words you want them to build. As they build they can read the sight words.


6. Fine Motor Sight Word Building – @learn.through.play

How it Works:
Have students build the sight words on the flashcards. They can use tweezers to build the words. This is a great fine motor activity.


7. Sight Word Sensory Play – @real_learners_play

How it Works:
Create a sensory bin with letters, sight words, and flashcards. Have students build the sight words on the flashcards as they play.


8. Sight Word Hide & Seek – @teachertalkireland

How it Works:
This is a great partner activity. One student hides the monster under one of the cups. The other student lifts a cup to try and find the monster. They read the sight word after lifting a cup. The game stops once they find the monster. Then, they switch turns.


9. Sight Word Salt Tray – @playinspiredmum

How it Works:
Create a salt tray with salt, a bucket, and a popsicle stick. Place sight words in a bin beside the tray. Students practice writing the sight words in the salt.


10. Sight Word Sensory Practice – @creative_explorations

How it Works:
You will need sight words, letter tiles, clay, and a writing utensil. Have students pick a sight word, then build the sight word using the letter tiles. After they build the sight word they can write it in the clay.
